We headed up to Beauty Spot and the Unaka Mountain overlook yesterday, then across the entire length of the Wildlife Viewing Loop, on a spectacularly clear day for those endless views. The "loop" lived up to its name. We kicked up a large group a big mountain grouse, and two turkeys, including one huge bird we encountered right next to the AT in the grassy meadow at Beauty Spot.
The main update we wish to provide is that the Unaka Mountain Road (Forest Service Rd 230) is in as good a shape as we have ever seen. The unpaved portion has been graveled and graded across the entirety. Although you can still encounter some ruts and rocks, you can now make the trip in most any passenger car. You still better not try it with your lowrider. At many times, this route has been so rough as to inhibit traffic to all but the most rugged 4x4's. Thanks and congratulations to the Forest Service for the improvements. We hope the good road conditions encourage more folks to find their way to these terrific spots high up on Unaka Mtn. TN (the approach to the overlook area remains pretty ragged, but certainly passable in our car).
